Meta claims the US government is starting to use its AI, Llama – but what does that really mean?

During the company’s Q3 earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg disclosure that Meta is “working with the public sector to adopt Llama in the US government.”

A reporter from The Verge has reached out to Meta and spokeswoman Faith Eischen for comment explicitly that the company “partnered with the US State Department to see how Llama could help address various challenges – from expanding access to safe water and reliable electricity to supporting small businesses.”

Eischen added that Meta has also been in touch with the Department of Education to learn how Llama could make the financial aid process more user-friendly for students and is in discussions with others about how Llama could be used for the benefit of the government.

So what makes Meta’s Llama different from other AI programs?

TechCrunch explicitly that Llama is “unique” because it’s “open … meaning developers can download and use it however they want,” unlike ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini.

“Like other generative AI models, Llama can perform a number of different support tasks, such as encoding and answering basic math questions, as well as summarizing documents in eight languages (English, German, French, Italian, Portuguese , Hindi, Spanish and Thai),” the press continued. “Most text-based workloads—think analyzing files like PDFs and spreadsheets—are within its purview; none of the Llama models can process or generate images, although this may change in the near future.”

Zuckerberg said Meta’s expectations for Llama have been exceeded — meaning AI spending is about to increase at the company as well.

“During the year, we had a range of what we thought we could do, and we were able to do more than we hoped and expected at the beginning of the year,” Zuckerberg said. said. “It’s actually something I’m quite happy the team is doing well. That execution makes me somewhat more optimistic that we can continue to build this at a good pace.”

Meta has constantly updated their AI programs in all the apps they own.
