The rule of schools! Kids “grow their roots” at Concord High

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Concord High School is changing the way students learn in the classroom by moving away from traditional teaching methods.

Students grow their roots by learning how to support the roots of a plant.

“It grows 25 pounds of fresh produce a month,” said Concord High School Principal Jill Snyder.

Concord High students produce fresh nutrients vertically through flexible farms. It is an efficient agricultural technology.

“Our school needs to be able to provide students with the opportunity to then learn outside of the traditional classroom setting,” Snyder said.

Students branch out in the classroom by learning the science of hydroponics—growing plants in water instead of soil.

“It’s fun and different because I’m used to planting in soil,” Hayden Stanhope said.

From the ground to the canteen:

“It’s also satisfying to see people eating things you’ve created,” Stanhope said.

Products are created and consumed by high school students.

“We have a daily taco bar and we use lettuce every day,” Snyder said.

Building on their education, mobile indoor hydroponics also allows students to grow fresh food year-round.

“Raising water in towers is really efficient,” Stanhope said.

The program continues to grow as more students gain an appetite for the class.
