Man who attacked former US senator in Iowa gets less than a year in prison

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (WOWT) – The man who attacked a former US senator from Arizona while visiting Council Bluffs, he was sentenced to less than a year in prison.

Dominic Henton, 26, received a 360-day jail sentence plus credit for the 89 days he has already spent behind bars on the felony assault charge. After completing his prison sentence, Henton must serve two years of probation, receive sex offender treatment and register as a sex offender for 10 years.

Henton attacked Martha McSally in November 2023. The former US senator from Arizona and fighter pilot was visiting Omaha for a speech.

He was arrested after Omaha police responded to a check call he made to dispatchers; and he was later charged on a charge of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, a misdemeanor.

Shortly after the incident, McSally posted a video on social media saying a man grabbed her “in a bear hug” and then molested and fondled her until she fought him off. She said she threw her water bottle at him and chased him into the brush, where he hid before running away.

“I’m fine. I was in a fight, flight or freeze situation and I chose to fight,” she said in an Instagram post.

During Thursday’s hearing, McSally expressed that Henton deserves additional prison time for the trauma and pain he caused her.

“I was in pain and sick from the attack. Understandably, the trauma affected my body and soul, she said. “Becoming a contributing member of society, which would mean taking full responsibility for these actions and decisions, apologizing for assaulting me, which Henton just requested versus resisting the sex offender treatment program. “
