Botswana elections: Duma Boko – the politician who did the unthinkable

Boko, captivated the nation going through tough economic times with his promises of change, employment and government handouts.

“People fell in love with him and this is the result,” journalist Innocent Selatlhwa told the BBC’s Focus on Africa podcast.

Throughout his campaign, at rallies, Boko asked supporters to approach and listen to their grievances in a way that would make him appealing to the youth, the journalist added. Boko was serious but always engaging and friendly.

He also ruled out running as a member of parliament and went all out to become president – a bold move, according to Selatlhwa.

Born in 1969 in the central district of the country, in the small town of Mahalapye, Boko has always had a sense of respect, according to those close to him.

“He was so determined to do the right thing. His sense of justice was deep,” his aunt told a local newspaper.

While in school, he was elected student council president.

In his legal career, he has emerged as one of the best lawyers in the country, according to political analyst Lesole Machacha.
