A massive playground fire in Cincinnati shut down the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge; no injuries

Ohio firefighters responded to a fire early Friday morning that closed the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge connecting Cincinnati and Newport, Kentucky.

According to an initial report obtained by USA TODAY, Cincinnati Fire was notified of “a vehicle fire” near the Interstate 471 bridge that crosses the Ohio River just before 3:30 a.m.

The response to the report escalated to “full alarm 1” when they discovered what is described as a “large outdoor fire” at a play set in Sawyer Point Park under the bridge. The report says that 50 firefighters responded to the scene.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, part of the USA TODAY Network, Lindsay Haegele, public information officer for the fire department, said the fire did not start in a vehicle as originally reported.

“Due to the volume of the fire, numerous steam masters and large fire lines were deployed in a defensive position to protect the bridge structure and extinguish the fire,” the report continued.

“The fire has been contained and companies remain on scene carrying out final extinguishment, overhaul and rescue,” the report continued.

The northbound and southbound lanes were closed due to the incident, according to the report.

Cincinnati Fire Investigation is looking into the matter.

According to the Enquirer, the fire caused severe damage to the park, and damage and soot can be seen on the bridge. Haegele said no hazardous material was involved to the knowledge of the fire department.

Videos obtained by the outlet show the massive fire that caused the shutdown, impacting traffic.

Representatives of the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet told local news that Inspectors and engineers were also on the scene.

“They will be inspecting the bridge, looking through it to determine if it is safe to allow traffic back onto the bridge. We don’t have a timeline yet on when that will happen,” Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Jake Ryle told Fox 19.

Officials said so far there have been no reports of injuries to civilians or firefighters.
