$1 million stolen in dinner burglaries

Arapahoe County deputies are investigating a series of burglaries at dinner to multi-million dollar homes that are similar to a national burglary tourism trend.

Between Feb. 2 and Oct. 18, there were at least nine robberies of high-value single-family homes in Arapahoe County, usually between one and two hours after sunset. Thieves steal valuables such as jewelry, designer purses, cash and safes from homes.

The total value of the stolen items amounts to approximately one million dollars. No arrests have been made at this time.

All homes were broken into in Arapahoe County, four in Cherry Hills Village, two in Littleton, one in Columbine Valley and two in unincorporated Arapahoe County, back to open space, fields or trees. In most of these burglaries in the area, two to four suspects worked together while wearing masks, hoodies, gloves and sometimes carrying a backpack before smashing through an exterior glass door and going through cabinets, closets and bathrooms to look for valuables.

Most of the break-ins happened on Fridays between 5 and 8 p.m., when most homeowners aren’t home. However, at least one burglary in the village of Cherry Hills was interrupted by a homeowner who was present.

Investigators say the break-ins align with a trend of similar thefts across the country, particularly in Scottsdale, Arizona and California’s San Fernando Valley.
