A mass shooting in downtown Orlando leaves 2 dead and 6 injured

Two people were killed and six others were injured in a shooting in downtown Orlando overnight, according to police.

According to Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith, officers reported shots fired around 1:07 a.m. Friday morning in the area of Central Blvd and Orange Avenue, and a second report of shots fired minutes later in the area of Washington Street and Orange Ave.

The six injured people were transported to area hospitals for “further treatment,” according to Smith, where they are in stable condition.

Smith said shortly after shots fired were reported, a 17-year-old suspect was located and taken into custody. The teenager had previously been arrested for grand theft in 2023, Smith said.

“This is still an active investigation. As we gather more information, we will give you another update,” Smith said at a news conference Friday morning.

This is a developing story.
