GE Vernova selects Worley Chemetics to design key component of BWRX-300 SMR

GE Vernova’s nuclear business, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH), has selected Worley Chemetics to design and manufacture the containment condensation system for the BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR).

Worley Chemetics has become part of the BWRX-300 Qualified Supplier Group with a manufacturing facility in Pickering, Ontario, Canada.

This group is designed to ensure a reliable, cost-effective and innovative process for manufacturing and marketing the BWRX-300.

Suppliers that meet predefined criteria and customer requirements, as well as demonstrate a willingness to invest in BWRX-300 supply chain capabilities, are chosen for the pool.

Worley Chemetics President Andrew Barr said, “We are excited to partner with GE Hitachi to help solve the complex challenges of the energy transition while expanding nuclear opportunities in Canada.

“This partnership builds on Worley Chemetics’ 60-year legacy of providing sustainable process technologies, our recently acquired ASME nuclear certification and our new specialized alloy manufacturing facility in Ontario.”

Ontario Power Generation (OPG), GEH, AtkinsRéalis and Aecon Construction Group also signed a contract to build the first BWRX-300 at OPG’s site in Darlington, Ontatio.

The collaboration plans to build four 300 MW units at the site.

OPG’s extensive operating experience together with GEH’s nuclear expertise are expected to contribute to the project’s success and influence the energy landscape in other regions.

With early site preparation already completed, construction is scheduled to begin next year and commercial operation is expected by the end of 2029.

The BWRX-300 is a key element of GE Vernova’s energy transition strategy. It aims to assist customers in achieving their decarbonisation goals, while also focusing on reducing construction and operating costs.

The BWRX-300 design incorporates existing fuel, plant simplifications and proven components and is based on a Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) certified reactor design.

GEH Advanced Nuclear Executive Vice President Sean Sexstone said: “The containment condensing system is a key passive safety feature of the BWRX-300 design and we look forward to working with Worley Chemetics on a production design that will provide safe, outstanding quality and performance. .

“This collaboration aims to strengthen Ontario’s nuclear supply chain and bring economic benefits to the region.”

Last month, GE Vernova he was awarded a contract to deliver a 9HA.01 gas turbine for a 600 MW hydrogen power plant at Singapore’s Pulau Seraya power plant.
