47 strikes kill in Gaza as Israel denies damaging UNRWA office in West Bank – The Irish Times

Israeli the strikes killed 47 Palestinians and dozens injured overnight, mostly children and women, in Deir Al-Balah city, Nuseirat camp and Al-Zawayda city in central The Gaza Stripthe Palestinian WAFA news agency reported on Friday.

It comes after Israeli forces struck one of the last functioning hospitals in the besieged northern Gaza Strip on Thursday, destroying a warehouse of medical supplies that had been delivered to the facility days earlier by World Health Organizationaccording to Palestinian officials and a spokesman for the UN agency.

The Israeli military said it was “not aware of a strike” on the facility, Kamal Adwan Hospital, but said it was looking into the reports.

Israeli troops withdrew from the hospital on Monday after a three-day raid during which they arrested most of the medical staff and killed two children, Gaza health officials said. The army said the people it detained were suspected to be Hamas fighters.

In LebanonIsrael carried out airstrikes in the southern suburbs of Beirut early Friday, the first strikes there in nearly a week.

Elsewhere in the region, Israeli bulldozers damaged the office of the United Nations aid agency Unrwa in from the West Bank Nur Shams camp on Thursday, the agency chief said, with Israel disputing its account in the latest exchange between the two sides.

Philippe Lazzarini, who heads the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, said on social media platform X that the office was badly damaged and could no longer be used.

The Israeli military, however, issued a statement denying responsibility for any damage to the building.

“The claim that the Unrwa offices in Nur Shams were destroyed by IDF soldiers is false,” the statement said, referring to the Israel Defense Forces.

“Terrorists planted explosives near the Unrwa offices, which were then detonated in an attempt to injure IDF soldiers. The explosives probably caused damage to the structure,” the IDF statement said.

On monday, Israel passed a law banning UNRWA from operating in the country, legislation that could impact its work in war-torn Gaza.

Lawmakers who drafted the legislation cited what they described as the involvement of UNRWA employees in the October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel and employees belonging to Hamas and other armed groups.

The UN, after an investigation, said in August that nine UNRWA staff were possibly involved in the October 7 attacks and fired them. Unrwa says the overwhelming majority of his staff adhere to his principles of neutrality.

Lazzarini called the vote to ban UNRWA a “dangerous precedent” that goes against the UN Charter and violates Israel’s obligation under international law.
