ORANGEBURG, SC (WIS/Gray News ) – Authorities in South Carolina are investigating after an altercation broke out at an early voting location in Orangeburg County on Wednesday.

The dispute was between a man wearing a politicized hat and poll workers.

According to video sent to WIS, the man wearing a “Let’s go Brandon” hat swears at a poll worker when he’s told he can’t vote at the Orangeburg County seat.

In the video, poll workers can be heard telling the man to take his hat “out.”

A poll clerk said she could not serve him and asked for the next voter in line. The man then threw his hat in the direction of the person in line to vote, according to the video.

After that, the altercation escalated and a poll worker appeared to hit the man, according to the video.

Officials at the early voting site appeared to detain the man as he approached poll workers.

The Orangeburg County Department of Public Safety reportedly responded to the fight.

South Carolina the law restricts what people can wear at the polling places. Voters are not allowed to wear anything that displays a political party, candidate’s name or a ballot issue.

The the law says “The manager of polls shall use all reasonable means to keep the area within five hundred feet of any such entrance free of political literature and displays, and county and municipal law enforcement officers, upon request of a director of polls, shall remove or cause to be removed. removed any material within five hundred meters of any such entry distributed or displayed in violation of this section.”

The South Carolina Division of Law Enforcement is now investigating the incident.

Early voting in South Carolina runs through Nov. 2.
