• The accident occurred during an event at a race track in Costa Rica.
  • The driver of the 911 GT3 got the launch wrong and got a bunch of wheelspin.
  • Fortunately, the Mustang driving alongside the Porsche was not ejected in the crash.

In a tug of war between a Porsche 911 GT3 and a Ford Mustang, the result should be obvious. The Porsche, thanks in part to its strong launch control, should smoke the Ford. Meanwhile, the driver of the Mustang is most likely to send it into a wall or a crowd of people. However, this did not happen when a GT3 and a Mustang recently raced each other in Costa Rica.

This wasn’t a polished drag strip, but the pit right of a local track, apparently part of a larger event that attracted all manner of cars and bikes for some occasional on-track showdowns. Unfortunately for the Porsche driver, he apparently skipped the “how to start your car” part of the owner’s manual.

Clock: Mustang and SUV collide on the freeway, then all hell breaks loose

That the white 911 Alongside the bright red Mustang, the unmistakable soundtrack of the naturally aspirated 3.8 liter six-cylinder fills the stands. A few moments later, he retreats. Bizarrely, the sound of the car jumping the rev limiter makes it sound like the launch control was engaged but left the line at a snail’s pace, perhaps because the system wasn’t on or the driver didn’t know what they did they were doing

Whatever the case, the car spins its rear wheels and soon begins to slide. The driver appears to have overcorrected and ends up crashing into a concrete barrier on the side of the track. The force of the impact not only shocks the event participants, but also destroys the front of the Porsche, leaving it with extensive damage that will be very expensive to repair.

Fortunately for all involved, the Porsche didn’t steer straight in Mustangnor did it hit a photographer kneeling precariously on the nearby grass.
