Omaha man convicted for role in 2023 Railyard shootings

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – An Omaha man sentenced for his role in a 2023 shooting related to a gang feud in Railway district he learned his sentence on Thursday.

A Lancaster County judge sentenced Kendall Williams, 29, to 18 to 20 years in prison.

He pleaded no contest to a charge of attempted possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Instead, prosecutors dismissed charges of use of a firearm to commit a felony, unlawful/intentional discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

On April 2, 2023, Lincoln police responded to a report of shots fired near the Railyard. Two vehicles were found with bullet holes and more than 70 shell casings were recovered from the scene.

LPD said they initially made contact with Louis Benson35, who was in one of the damaged vehicles and had a Glock 17 pistol inside. Further investigation led to his arrest Marvin Wright34.

According to court documents, Williams was seen in downtown Lincoln with at least three other people, including Wright, on the night of the shooting. Security video captured the two men getting into a maroon Chevrolet Tahoe, which was later found crashed and riddled with bullet holes.

Additional security video showed Wright throwing a gun into a dumpster near 7th and Q streets, court documents said.

Lincoln police recovered a Glock 19 handgun from the dumpster, which was then swabbed for DNA. Court records show the Nebraska State Patrol Crime Lab detected Williams’ DNA on the swabs.

A criminal background check revealed that Williams was previously convicted of Class IIA felony murder in Douglas County Court on August 14, 2021, making him prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Court records show at least five guns were involved in the incident, but only two were found.
