Pawn Shop Refuses Guns From Customers: Possibly Prevents Mass Shootings

Cameron Peterson, a 20-year-old man is accused of targeting multiple locations.

“It was good; it was normal,” said Toni Gaytan, clerk at Comal Pawn Shop.

Gaytan and Glenn Avriett, both employees of Comal Pawn Shop in New Braunfels, recently learned that Peterson pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to receive a firearm for use and commission of a felony.

“Here I was talking to a guy who was going to do bad things,” Gaytan said.

Avriett says when Peterson first came in January of this year, he tried to order a gun online to be picked up at the store. However, after running a background check, the store found he was too young to buy it.

“He tried to buy a rifle, but it was considered ‘all other guns’ because it had a pistol grip and a shorter barrel,” Avriett said.

Denied the first time, Peterson returned in May to buy another gun, but this time he was flagged, the ATF contacted him within half an hour.

“If someone is denied, most of the time it’s just a denial and we never hear anything,” Avriett said.

Federal officials say video footage from a New Braunfels park shows Peterson discussing an attack on Buc-ee High School, Canyon High School and New Braunfels High School.

“Be careful out there; that’s all I have to say,” Gaytan said.

His sentencing is scheduled for early next year.
