Shooting reported in Greeley hospital parking lot, suspect found dead at home | News

The suspect in a Thursday morning shooting that injured a woman at UCHealth Greeley Hospital was later found dead at a home in Evans, according to Greeley Police.

Just after 8 a.m., police responded to the hospital at 6767 W. 29th St. for a report of a shooting. The victim, a 35-year-old woman, was shot multiple times in the parking lot but made it to the emergency room for treatment, Greeley police said. She is expected to survive.

The shooter fled the scene before police arrived. Following the shooting, the hospital was placed on “secure status,” according to Greeley Police.

While at the hospital, investigators learned the suspect ran into a home in the 1900 block of McNitt Street in Evans. Officers from the Greeley and Evans Police Departments responded.

Because the home is close to both Chappelow Arts Magnet School, in the 2000 block of 35th Street, and Dos Rios Elementary School, at 2201 34th Street, Greeley-Evans District 6 was notified. Schools were temporarily placed on lockdown, but normal operations have since resumed.

When police arrived at the home on McNitt, they found a car on fire in the driveway. The flames spread to the house before firefighters brought it under control.

The police made brief contact with the suspect and confirmed that he was alone but barricaded inside the house.

The Greeley SWAT Team and the Weld County Regional SWAT Team responded but were unable to get an answer from the man. They eventually entered the house and found the man dead. Police identified him only as a 38-year-old man and did not provide information on how he died.

Police said they believe the victim and suspect are known to each other and that the shooting was not random. A statement from UCHealth indicated the shooting was related to domestic violence.
