Dates Announced for KY Medical Marijuana Dispensary License Lotteries

The Kentucky Office of Medical Cannabis will choose which medical marijuana dispensary applicants will receive licenses starting in late November, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Thursday.

The Medical Cannabis Office will choose two winners lotteries hosted by the Kentucky Lottery Corporation in Louisville. The first lottery, scheduled for Nov. 25, will determine winners for nine of the Commonwealth’s 11 dispensary licensing regions. Four winners will be drawn for each region, with each county in that region eligible to receive one dispensary.

The second lottery, on Dec. 16, will determine the four winners from the other two regions, as well as the winners from Jefferson and Fayette counties, both slated to receive two dispensaries each due to their size.

Four winners will be drawn for the following dispensary regions on November 25:

  • Region 3: Northeast
  • Region 4: South Central
  • Region 5: Cumberland
  • Region 6: Mountain
  • Region 7: Pennyrile
  • Region 8: Western Kentucky
  • Region 9: Lincoln Trail
  • Region 10: Northern Kentucky
  • Region 11: Green River

Four winners will be chosen for the Bluegrass and Kentuckiana regions as a whole. Two more winners will be drawn for both Fayette County and Jefferson County:

  • Region 1: Bluegrass
  • Region 1: (Fayette County only)
  • Region 2: Kentucky
  • Region 2: Kentuckiana (Jefferson County only)

Beshear also announced Thursday that business license applications for compliance facilities will certainly reopen for November. Licenses for safety compliance facilities, sometimes called testing labs, are the only type of medical marijuana business licenses that are currently distributed without a lottery because the law allows for an unlimited number of them.

Beshear’s announcements come after the Kentucky Office of Medical Cannabis announced 26 winners of the medical marijuana grower and processor licenses at sa licensing lottery Monday. Two Jefferson County applicants, 1248 KYP LLC and Synapse Remedies LLC, were announced as winners.
