The City Council is calling for an audit of MPD’s response to the dispute with neighbors that led to the shooting

A group of Minneapolis city leaders is calling for an independent review of a recent dispute with neighbors that ended with a man hospitalized after being shot and another man in custody.

As 5 EYE WITTNESS NEWS reported last weekDavis Moturi says he has repeatedly called the police about threats made by his neighbor, John Sawchak, 54.

Many city council members say a separate review is needed in this case. Prosecutors say Sawchak shot Moturi after a months-long dispute. The video shows Moturi cutting down a tree near the property boundary and then there is a pop before it falls to the ground.

However, it took the officers days arrest Sawchak after prosecutors charged him with the shooting and after city council members called on police to take action.

Moturi also says, for nearly a year, she has been seeking help from Minneapolis police regarding harassment and threats from Sawchak. On Sunday, Police Chief Brian O’Hara also apologized saying the department had “failed” Moturi.

During Thursday’s meeting, board members called for an independent review of the case in addition to the internal review.

“To see another black man not get the justice he deserved and to see our police department or leadership initially blame the victim for the cause of the near death experience – it was disheartening to hear that our actions to bring attention to eight months of life. inaction has been labeled politics,” Ward 2 Councilman Robin Wonsley said.

Early Thursday afternoon, a spokesman for Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey issued the following statement regarding an independent review of the shooting:

“Mayor Frey fully supports an independent review of this incident. The mayor and the city are committed to always doing better, and that means taking a close look at past actions and finding where there might be ways to improve and grow.

“The Mayor sends his condolences to Davis Moturi, his wife Caroline, their family and friends. The safety of our residents is a top priority and any form of violence or hate speech is completely unacceptable and does not align with who we are as a community.

Brian O’Hara will continue to serve as Minneapolis Police Chief.”
