The Henderson Police Department is expanding its license plate reader system

The Henderson Police Department says it will expand its license plate reading system citywide.

Henderson Police say they have received funding to add more cameras to the pole for the Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) system. These cameras will be located in strategic locations around Henderson.

The city bought 54 cameras through grants that were added to the systems in the car. These cameras are portable and can be moved.

An ALPR automatically captures passing vehicles and their license plate information. The software can check the number against a list of license plates flagged as “vehicles of interest,” such as stolen cars or missing persons.

Police say the system only focuses on license plate data and does no surveillance.

The data captured also remains anonymous, and officers can only identify a vehicle’s registered owner by searching a separate state government database.

Henderson Police have been using ALPR technology in a limited capacity since 2011.
