University of Sydney NSW Liberal Party to investigate after students break sexual assault report

The University of Sydney has launched an immediate investigation after students went public with a report of rape, harassment and notices at residential colleges.

It comes just days after a bullying incident saw 27 students either expelled or suspended over a “gross humiliation” incident against a student at St Paul’s College.

In footage from Wednesday night’s Student Representative Council (SRC) meeting, two male students can be seen shedding tears and a third throwing pages from The Red Zone report.

The report comes after a 2018 investigation by national group End Rape on Campus Australia found disturbing behavior at University of Sydney colleges, including male students ejaculating in female students’ beauty products and an annual event where students were encouraged to post graphic details about each other online. .

At the SRC meeting, The Red Zone report was handed out by the campus women’s collective to attendees.

Councilor Ellie Robertson of the left-wing feminist action group addressed the rising incidences of bullying, harassment and sexual violence in a speech, which she said was the result of “elitist culture” in colleges.

She can be heard saying “in the last week we’ve seen almost 10% of students at St Paul’s College either suspended or expelled…in a horrific incident of bullying”, before the hall erupted in response to the students’ destruction . report.

SRC president Harrison Brennan said documents were vandalized during the speech by the women’s collective.

“While they were talking about the St Paul issue … (some students) decided to shout back during the speeches and destroy The Red Zone report they were given,” he said.

“I think it was pretty deplorable behavior … it was profound and shocking that they were making a big show out of it.”

The three students are believed to be affiliated with the Liberal Party. The ABC has contacted the Sydney University Liberal Club for comment.

“Absolutely unacceptable”

In a statement to the ABC, the university’s deputy vice-chancellor (education) Joanne Wright said she was “deeply disappointed” by the reports and expected “higher standards from our students”.

She said she had launched an “immediate investigation” and that “any behavior that mocks survivors of victims or ignores the impact of trauma resulting from sexual misconduct is absolutely unacceptable.”

NSW Liberal Party leader Mark Speakman told the ABC he had asked the state director to “urgently investigate”.

“Any mocking of a report of disgusting behavior is itself disgusting behavior,” he said.

The report’s co-author, Nina Funnell, said the report contained photos and real names of rape victims who had been recorded and family members of students who had died as a result of hazing.

“The Red Zone Report documents nearly 100 years of vice and rape, as well as 3 deaths (including one murder) at USYD,” she wrote for X.

“Laughing in front of them isn’t just insensitive, it’s telling.

“It’s a slap in the face to the survivors as well as the families of those who didn’t make it.”

The nearly 100-year-old student body launched the political careers of three former Prime Ministers John Howard, Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull, as well as former NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian.
