All-Time Agatha Has Yet Another Shocking Death (And It’s More Significant Than You Think)

We finally reached the end of the Witch Road, but there was one more loss for the coven at the end. The two-episode finale on Wednesday night Agatha All Along was full of revelations about the Road, the witches on it, and even what might be next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but all of those revelations came at a price: yet another witch has met her end, and this time, it could have major implications . moving forward. Warning: Spoilers for his ending Agatha All Along beyond this point. Read on only if you really want to know.

In the end, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) did not survive the adventure undertaken in the series, the seemingly invincible and scheming witch was eventually eliminated. However, it wasn’t the Road that killed Agatha, nor was it a failed trial, or anything like that, really. Instead, Agatha willingly went to Death – and it turns out that the end for the legendary witch is only the beginning of the story. Picking up from last week’s trial, which saw Lilia (Patti LuPone) sacrifice herself to put an end to the Salem SevenAgatha is on the road again and comes face to face with Rio (Aubrey Plaza) aka Death. It seems that Agatha has been distracting Rio from Death’s real target: Billy (Joe Locke) all along. It seems that after Rio Billy is an abomination who messed with the “sacred balance” taking a second life and she must stop him from doing the same for Tommy. You see, it turns out that Tommy hasn’t been reborn yet and Billy’s mission to find his brother is a problem. Agatha ends up making Rio a deal: since Rio can’t kill Billy because he’d just reincarnated, he has to surrender to Death willingly. Agatha says she’ll talk him into it, but only if Rio stops chasing her. Rio agrees.

Agatha, Billy and Jen (Sasheer Zamata) continue on their way to the final trial, which sees Jen realize that Agatha was the witch who bound her and thus, Jen breaks free. But Agatha tells Billy about Tommy and how he needs a corpse to get in, and during the final process, Agatha guides Billy through finding a vessel for Tommy, causing Billy to “finish” process and disappear. Agatha also completes the trial, but ends up confronting Death, who is not pleased that Billy was not delivered to her. A fight ensues, Billy appears – fully in his power – and helps Agatha by giving her some of his power. Agatha then seems to turn against Billy again, revealing her understanding with Rio, but when Billy mentally asks Agatha if this is how her own son died, Agatha does something unexpected: she kisses Rio and it’s a literal kiss of the dead. Agatha dies, sacrificing herself for Billy.

But the story does not end here. The final episode reveals that Billy realizes that he has created the Witches’ Road, and that this realization comes with a surprise visitor: Agatha, as a ghost. Agatha reveals that before Billy, the Road was really just a myth, a lie, a con created by Agatha centuries ago to kill witches and take their power. When Billy fully understands that the Road’s manifestation means he killed Mrs. Hart, Alice, and Lilia, he finds himself enraged and sets out to banish Agatha. He stops, however, when Agatha’s ghost reveals why she doesn’t want to simply pass on to the afterlife: she doesn’t want to face her son. This leads to a tender moment between Billy and Agatha, with Billy saying that he thinks Nicholas will forgive her, but in the end, Agatha suggests that she and Billy would make a good team, with Agatha being a sort of mentor to Billy. The episode – and the series – ends with Billy sealing the road and Agatha announcing “let’s find Tommy” as the two go out into the world together.

Of course, it’s a major development, not just because Agatha dies, but because Agatha (as a ghost) teaming up with Billy sets in motion the possibility that Marvel, in order to search for Tommy, will start the Young Avengers or even take over a adaptation from the Children’s Crusade. It also makes Agatha more in line with her comic book counterpart, as she is now able to train Billy with his magic – in the comics, Agatha trained Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the art of magic. With Agatha, to an extent, redeemed, the possibilities are somewhat endless as to where the MCU can go with the character, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
