Birmingham double shooting leaves one man dead, another injured; 1 in custody

One man was killed and a second man was wounded in a double shooting Wednesday night in southwest Birmingham, police said.

Just after 6 p.m. Wednesday, West Precinct officers received a call of a person shot in the 1700 block of Pearson Avenue SW, Officer Truman Fitzgerald said.

Officers arrived at the scene to find an adult man suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, Fitzgerald said, then police found a second man lying on the sidewalk with a life-threatening injury.

Members of the community were already rendering aid to one of the victims when “our officers stepped in and took over rescue duties,” Fitzgerald said.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on scene and took both victims to UAB Hospital, where the man with life-threatening injuries died from his injuries.

The preliminary investigation revealed that everyone involved in the shooting knew each other, according to Fitzgerald.

“We believe it all stemmed from an argument between the deceased victim and a third male adult,” he said. “He was not shot in this case. … We believe that all parties involved knew each other, so this is an incident where the suspect and the victim or victims knew each other.”

A police person labeled a person of interest in the case was detained at the scene and is due to be interviewed at Birmingham Police headquarters in the city centre.

That person’s involvement in the incident was still being resolved by detectives as of Wednesday night, Fitzgerald said.

“What we need from the public right now is if you have additional information, we encourage you to do so call CrimeStoppers so you can get paid for your tips,” the officer said, adding that informants can remain anonymous.
