Family participates in “Project Pumpkin Teal” to raise awareness for children with life-threatening allergies this Halloween

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Halloween is a fun-filled holiday for many, but it can also be scary for children with life-threatening food allergies.

“Campbell is allergic to dairy, eggs, peanuts and tree nuts. so, almost all chocolates are off the table for him,” said Mary Megan Newman.

Her son Campbell has to avoid most of the candy ingredients, so the tricks have to look different for kids like him.

“They want to be able to participate and have fun and enjoy Halloween, but they also don’t want to be scared and worried that they’re going to have to use their EpiPen on Halloween night,” she said.

So their house is participating in the “Teal Pumpkin Project”.

“The Teal Pumpkin Project is an opportunity to include those kids in the Halloween fun and allow them to participate by going door-to-door and not worry about running into potentially life-threatening candy.” Newman said.

Their home shares items such as toys and trinkets so they are safe for all trick-or-treaters.

“It’s really not very expensive to be able to include these kids, and the best part is that none of these items expire, so whatever is left over, you can use it again next year,” she said.

She hopes to spread awareness so more homes participate each year.

“For kids like my son to actually be able to go door to door in their neighborhood … you know, we don’t have to call our friends in the neighborhood and say, ‘Hey, can you make sure you have something safe . for Campbell to have tonight? to make it a true trick-or-treating experience,” Newman said.

They share their message so that children can still have an enjoyable experience.
