Brave your way through a haunted experience on a real naval ship!

BAY CITY, Mich. – Halloween season is here, and that means all over mid-Michigan there are haunted houses, woods and hayrides for fans of the spooky holiday to enjoy. However, for those looking to step it up a notch this year, the Edson Incident is the attraction for you.

The USS Edson is a Forrest Sherman-class destroyer that once served the US Navy. The ship was built in 1958 and decommissioned in 1988, and after thirty years of service, she was transferred to the Saginaw Valley Naval Museum in 2012. Four years later, Edson had her final transition, a seasonal change that would allow Edson become a haunted attraction in September and October.

Ross Gifford, co-owner and operator of the Edson Incident, says there was no original plan for the naval ship to become a haunted attraction, but that the idea came from reported paranormal activity on the ship.

“There’s actually a real ghost on the ship. We were paranormal investigators, and that’s kind of how we got into this whole thing,” Gifford said.

The Edson Incident has been open for nine years now, with a different theme to challenge the Halloween season. In addition to being a fun attraction during the season, it has also become a community event that everyone can take part in, whether they experience the ship as a patron or as a volunteer.

Students from local high schools and colleges are invited each year to volunteer as make-up artists, actors and engineers.

While the Edson incident provides a unique experience for those involved, it also helps secure a future for the retired historic ship that houses it. The Edson Incident is the ship’s largest annual fundraiser. It offers thrill seekers a complete experience with monsters, skeletons and other scary elements. When the night is over, the same volunteers help break up the deck that same night so the ship can be returned to its normal state as a naval museum.

If you want to experience the Edson incident for yourself, your time is limited. The Edson Incident ends on Sunday, November 1st and won’t return until next Halloween season.
