Chipper Jones weighs in on Freddie Freeman leaving the Atlanta Braves

Former Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman dominates in the World Series. He is the clear leader for the MVP series. However, his run brings some excitement since leaving Atlanta in free agency back into contention.

Another notable ex-brave chimed in as he caught up on the chatter.

It started when former Braves writer for The Athletic Jeff Schultz tweeted about Freeman’s fourth home run of the World Series on Tuesday night.

“He’s too old.”
“He will slide.”
“Not worth the contract.”

While the tweet is vague at face value, the implications are pretty obvious. Letting Freeman go was a mistake.

Someone quoted him on Twitter as pointing out that Freeman chose to leave and someone else tried to point out that Freeman’s agent was the reason.

This highlights a controversy that arose following Freeman’s first game in Atlanta with the Dodgers. He fired his agent after that weekend series due to Freeman not being happy with how his free agency went.

Reports included that his former agent handled things in a way that prevented Freeman from re-signing in Atlanta. The former agent denied this.

That’s where Chipper Jones jumped in.

“The agent works for him, not the other way around.” he said in an answer.

After the person he answered showed him a screenshot of a Colin Cowherd article discussing Freeman’s agent, Jones decided he wouldn’t hear it. He defended the former agent and pointed out that Freeman could have stayed with the Braves if he wanted to.

He also took the opportunity to defend first baseman Matt Olson, who has been mostly solid as Freeman’s successor. He pointed out that everyone has a selective memory of how they handled the situation in the last two years.

Jones’ response has been edited for clarity, with the original tweet embedded below.

“No excuses…as a player, you play where you want to play. The agent works for the player. Any miscommunication is the player’s fault. No deal is signed or rejected without the player’s consent. Point. But hey, I’m happy for Freddie in the long run and he and his family are happy in Los Angeles Freddie’s name (Freeman) comes up on US TV in WS and people are bitter (The) in 11 months, people (Freeman) don’t play happy you still have a stud at first base!

Jones played with the Braves from 1993 to 2012, his entire career. He was an eight-time All-Star, the NL MVP in 1999, received MVP votes in 13 seasons and was a first-ballot Hall of Famer in 2018.

Freeman signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers ahead of the 2022 season following the Braves’ World Series championship season. Olson was acquired in a trade from the Oakland Athletics that same offseason.

During the 2024 World Series, Freeman hit four home runs in four games—one in each game. He is in the present slashing .313/.353/1.188.
