A two-day hearing will decide what matters will be considered by the coroner looking into the deaths of people in last year’s weather events in Auckland.

The Auckland region was devastated by mass flooding that resulted in widespread damage and the death of four people, beginning on the evening of 27 January 2023.

Two volunteer firefighters were killed by a landslide in the coastal community of Muriwai during Cyclone Gabrielle a few weeks later.

The application hearing starts this morning and is set for two days at the Auckland District Court.

Coroner Erin Woolley will determine what matters should be considered during joint inquests.

A second hearing will take place next month in Hastings.

During the hearings, the coroner will hear submissions about the Auckland issues he believes should be part of the inquest and coronial inquest.
