A dog has died in an accidental shed fire, believed to have been caused by a wood stove.

Cleveland Fire Brigade were called to Arkley Crescent in Hartlepool on Tuesday evening.

A dog was found dead at the scene, it said, while a person suffered burns and received oxygen therapy for smoke inhalation.

The fire service said the cause was “believed to be accidental” and due to an unattended wood stove.

The fire started in a shed in a back garden and spread to the outside of a house.

Two engines from Hartlepool were sent to the West View area just before 19:00 GMT and the fire was out by 20:42, Cleveland Fire Brigade said.

North East Ambulance Service said it took one person to North Tees University Hospital for further treatment.
