Authorities are still waiting to determine the identity of a woman found dead near the Millcreek Mall last week as efforts are made to match any reported missing persons to the discovery.

The Millcreek Township Police Department released updated information Tuesday about the body, which Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook said earlier this week is a woman.

Based on information gathered during an autopsy on the woman Friday, according to Millcreek police, the woman was 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed about 168 pounds. She had no scars, marks or tattoos and no signs of traumatic injuries, police reported.

Cook said Monday that no evidence was found during the autopsy to indicate the woman was shot or stabbed. Her cause of death was still unknown Wednesday.

Millcreek police also reported that the woman had received previous professional medical care, which included at least three surgeries.

The female was found around 10:30 a.m. Oct. 24 in a narrow stretch of Walnut Creek behind Elevate Church on Millcreek Mall property in Millcreek Township. The discovery was made by a fisherman who said he was surveying the waterway for steelhead.

Cook said the female had probably been dead for four to six months. There was no clothing on the body, which he said could indicate the body had been caught in brush for an extended period of time.

Mercyhurst University’s Department of Applied Forensic Sciences is examining the remains as part of the ongoing investigation, the medical examiner said.

Verification of cases of missing persons, homeless population

Millcreek police said investigators contacted the Erie Police Bureau and Pennsylvania State Police to see if they had any open missing persons cases involving women that might be related to the discovery, but found none. Police said they have also released a nationwide tip to see if other missing persons cases may be related to the Millcreek incident.

Police said they were also making inquiries among the homeless population in the region.
