Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers are back with a new album – Well, not exactly new

In the seven years since Tom Petty died at age 66, he’s gone from beloved rocker to legend. His output is still revered to this day and, looking at the UK music charts, there is clearly an appetite for anything and everything to do with the late superstar.

Petty and his band the Heartbreakers recorded a hit new album in the UK this week. Long after dark debuts in a pair of charts following a special re-release, one that has attracted large audiences in that country.

Long after dark he almost makes the top 10 on one of the two counts he gets in this frame. The set opens at number 15 on the Official Physical Albums chart, which ranks only the best-selling full-lengths and EPs on any physical medium – be it CD, vinyl or otherwise – in the UK

The same project is also new for the number of official album downloads. On that list, which is specific to purchases that take place in download stores like iTunes and others, Long after dark debuts at number 91. It’s clear that Petty’s fans preferred to own the title on some physical format rather than simply download it.

Long after dark marks Petty and his group’s first new hit in both numbers in just a few years. They last debuted a title on the pair of charts in late 2022. At that time, Live at the Fillmore 1997 entered the charts in lower positions than the rockers’ most recent debuts this week.

On the Official Physical Albums chart, Petty and Company achieve the sixth-highest entry. Long after dark starts off the back of offerings from stars like Kylie Minogue, Rag’n’Bone Man, Confidence Man, Oasis and Maverick Sabre. There are many, many more new arrivals on the Official Album Downloads chart, as Petty and His Musicians earn the twenty-eighth highest-grossing spot. That amount doesn’t even include quite a few returnees who are also returning to the roster.

Petty and the Heartbreakers were released Long after dark in 1982 and nearly hit the top 40 on the main album chart across the pond. The rocker’s estate recently re-released the studio favorite as a deluxe edition and came with a number of previously unreleased tracks as well as other favors and extras that were clearly appealing to a large audience. That luxury drop helps Long after dark becomes a chart success again or, in the case of the charts it lands on in the UK, for the first time.
