Scarborough’s new council may add £28 to tax bills

Residents in wards including Castle, Falsgrave and Stepney, Northstead, Weaponness and Ramshill and Woodlands will be asked to elect 15 unpaid councilors in May.

A surcharge would be added to council tax bills to cover the costs, with the average householder in band D expected to pay an extra £28.88 for 2025-26.

The current council tax bill for Band D properties in Scarborough is £1,847.36.

The city council’s initial budget would cover costs including equipment, creating a website and a clerk’s salary.

A report prepared for Scarborough trustees said: “The new council, once elected, will set spending priorities, but the inaugural budget must reflect the establishment of the new council and an estimate of basic running costs.”

According to the report, band D property tax surcharge from 2024-25 for town councils elsewhere in North Yorkshire ranges from £27 in Knaresborough to £129 in Selby.
