One of the Southend Pier trains was damaged earlier this month after colliding with a buffer

One of a platform’s trains could be grounded for months while a recent accident is investigated, a council has said.

A Southend Pier the train was damaged during an incident at the seaward end of the wharf 1.25m (2km) track earlier this month.

Southend-on-Sea City Council said that Rail and Road Bureau (ORR) – the rail industry’s safety regulator – has yet to visit the site and launch an investigation, and this could be followed by a further independent investigation.

During a meeting on Monday, Matt Dent, a Labor councilor responsible for culture, tourism and business, said it was unclear when the train would run again, according to Local Democracy Reporting Service.

“Investigations in this regard are ongoing,” he said at a meeting of the scrutiny committee.

“Because it was a train wreck, there is a national body (ORR) that needs to be involved before we can go any further.”

In the accident on October 6, the train hit the buffers, sending shards of glass from a broken window flying through a carriage.

The train will stand on the sidelines while investigations into the accident take place

A council spokesman added: “The train will be out of service until the investigation is completed, for which we cannot give a timeframe (for).”

The train was one of two electric trains installed as part of a £3.5m investment for Southend.

One was out of action for five months after a technical problem left passengers trapped inside when the doors didn’t open.
