SAPD officer suspended 30 days after drunken disturbance while DJing at real estate gala

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio Police Department officer has been suspended 30 days after she was accused in March of causing a drunken disturbance at a real estate awards show where she had been hired to DJ.

Officer Kristie Bush, who told officers she played music at off-duty events as DJ Kristie Rose, was initially given a 45-day suspension in August, city disciplinary records show.

The suspension was later shortened to 30 days after Bush met with SAPD Chief William McManus.

The March 16 incident at the University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg Sky Room prompted officers from UIW PD and later SAPD to respond to the scene.

UIW PD released an incident report and 11.5 hours of body-worn camera footage from the incident following a public records request from KSAT earlier this month.

„Nu voi sta aici și arăt ca un criminal nenorocit”

Gala attendees told police that Bush loudly interrupted the host of the event while he was giving a speech on stage.

While describing the disturbance, a UIW officer was recorded on his worm cam saying Bush swore loudly and shouted, “Let’s party!”

A woman attending the event was seen on a body-worn camera telling Bush: “I knew you were around my son and you were very drunk and loud.”

Bush, 32, who was hired by the owner of a real estate company to play music between 10 p.m. and midnight, told officers she played some music as attendees arrived at the show on premieres a few hours earlier.

In the footage, she repeatedly complained about not being paid and that her contract stipulated that she would be paid before starting her set.

“Let me ask her just one thing. Do you think I can organize such an event and not pay you?” the host of the event asked Bush.

A second off-duty SAPD officer, Jonathan Kavanagh, was escorted out of the venue by UIW police after a heated confrontation between him, the event host and a friend of the host, who told police he had been sent to see if Bush was there. the right condition to perform as a DJ.

The footage shows Kavanagh being pulled away from the two men as the host tells Kavanagh to remove his hand from his face.

SAPD officials this month confirmed that Kavanagh was not disciplined over the incident.

Reached by phone, the event’s host told KSAT that 350 people were in attendance and that Bush was visibly intoxicated while waiting to perform his set.

He said he was contacted by an SAPD internal affairs investigator late this summer to give a statement, but was not informed that Bush had been suspended for the incident.

Bush told officers he had two alcoholic drinks, then said he had one, then said he had “a wine” but didn’t finish the drink, according to the footage.

Several UIW officers noted in the footage that Bush had bloodshot eyes and was slurring his speech.

Several gala attendees told police that Bush appeared to be intoxicated, according to the footage.

While waiting for SAPD supervisors to arrive at the scene, Bush argued with UIW police as they briefly refused to let her go to her vehicle.

“This is not worth my career. All I want to do is vape. It’s not worth anything. I just want to get off, go to my truck, hit my vape. May I have my boat please?” Bush asked.

After a UIW PD supervisor told Bush “no,” Bush responded, “Why? I didn’t cause any disturbance. It is not a crime.”

The supervisor then told Bush that the incident had become a disturbance.

“I’m not going to sit here and look like a bloody criminal. you are right You set a perfectly good example. And that’s why we should just be on duty and risk our lives instead of doing four hours of hell,” Bush said before ending his comments and taking a seat near the venue’s entrance.

Bush was then questioned by an SAPD sergeant in a back hallway of the location, the footage shows.

Bush’s SAPD disciplinary documents state that after a female SAPD officer arrived on the scene with a cadet, Bush asked the cadet, “What the hell are you looking at?”

No one was criminally charged in the gala incident and no criminal complaint was filed, records show.

Bush eventually left the venue without performing his set, the footage shows.

Kavanagh was eventually allowed back inside the venue, with a police escort, to smash Bush’s DJ equipment.

Bush was suspended for violations, including using intoxicants, being rude to the public/co-workers, disorderly conduct and failing to report for work, city disciplinary records show.

Bush did not return a phone call from KSAT seeking comment for this story.
