Police have arrested a man with a previous conviction for vehicular homicide after they caught him driving on a suspended license in Libertyville for the third time.

Lavell T. Craig, 47, of Kenosha, Wis., was charged with enhanced driving while license revoked with a prior reckless homicide conviction.

Lake County Deputy District Attorney Dino Katris said the Libertyville Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle around 2 a.m. on Sept. 21.

The car was going 50 mph in a 40 mph zone and the officer made a U-turn to catch up and make a traffic stop, Katris said.

Katris said Craig was the driver and handed the officer a state ID but did not have a driver’s license.

A man in the passenger seat, who had a valid driver’s license, was the owner of the car.

Craig claimed he was only driving because the passenger was not feeling well, Katris said.

The passenger reported that he did not need an ambulance and was fine to drive. The car was released to the passenger.

Katris said Craig’s license was previously revoked for reckless homicide.

Court records show Craig was charged with reckless homicide by motor vehicle for an incident in Waukegan on Aug. 23, 2002.

He pleaded guilty to the charge in April 2003 and was sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Craig has two prior violations for driving on a suspended license, the third being the Libertyville traffic stop.

Katris said Craig has been sentenced to prison multiple times for drug and gun cases and sex offender registration violations.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to hold Craig pending trial. The petition was granted and Craig remains incarcerated in the Lake County Jail.

A Lake County grand jury indicted Craig, which is a Class 1 felony, on Wednesday. He faces a mandatory prison sentence if convicted.
