Investigators from the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) and Indianapolis Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) determined the October 26 fire at Helping Veterans and Families of Indiana Inc.His (HVAF) flats in Manchester was accidental.

The investigation found that the fire started in the attic. What exactly started the fire remains undetermined.

“IFD and ATF have ended their involvement in the investigation,” IFD Battalion Chief Rita L. Reith said in an update Tuesday. “And we turned the situation over to HVAF management and their insurance company.”

In a press release Tuesday afternoon, HVAF said all 48 veterans have been accounted for and are being cared for in hotel rooms in the city. They coordinate with community partners to provide appropriate support.

Critical needs include permanent housing options, access to essential food, clothing and hygiene items, mobile phones and transportation.

The HVAF headquarters sustained no damage and regular support services will continue as scheduled, including pantry services from Donald W. Moreau Sr. Community Veterans Center.

The pantry will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30am to 2:30pm Additional pantry hours for displaced veterans are also offered throughout the week.
