Hochul, AG James Announces Measures to Protect Voters’ Rights: How to Report Problems?

With the general election underway, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James outlined comprehensive efforts to ensure voter rights and public safety, including a hotline to address voting issues and increased resources to counter misinformation.

As early voting continues through Nov. 3 and Election Day on Nov. 5 approaches, the state has launched a multi-agency initiative to protect against misinformation and ensure smooth voting processes. Hochul emphasized the importance of protecting democratic integrity, saying: “We are taking all necessary measures to ensure the sanctity of the democratic process so that everyone can have their voice heard.”

Attorney General James reiterated the state’s commitment to upholding the rights of New Yorkers. “My office has been preparing for months for a safe and smooth election process,” James said. Voters experiencing problems can call the Election Protection Hotline at (866) 390-2992.

This election protection strategy includes enhanced monitoring of online platforms, where officials warn voters to be alert to potential misinformation that could discourage or confuse voters. Election-related information, James stressed, should come from the New York State Board of Elections or local boards of elections.

Hochul’s administration has made significant investments in election security and infrastructure since 2019, committing more than $140 million in state and federal funds to critical upgrades, including purchasing new equipment and strengthening security measures. State Police Superintendent Steven G. James and other officials stressed the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies to protect the election process and provide a coordinated response to any disruption.

Hochul also highlighted recent legislative efforts to strengthen access to voting, including the John R. Lewis Statewide Voting Rights Act, which provides protections against voter suppression and intimidation, expands language assistance and promotes equal access to the polls . Additional legislation signed in August further strengthens voter protections nationwide.

Election Day polling locations, as well as real-time updates on any issue, are accessible through the New York State Board of Elections website. New Yorkers are encouraged to report any incidents of intimidation or voting barriers to local law enforcement or the Attorney General’s Office.
