Schools damaged during heavy storms in Mpumalanga

Ten of the damaged schools are high schools, where Year 12 students are currently sitting their final National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.

Department of Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga confirmed the department is on high alert but reported no disruption to Monday’s exams due to the actual use of community spaces as exam centers by district officials.

Meanwhile, Basic Education Deputy Minister Dr Reginah Mhaule congratulated district officials who averted a crisis on Monday by protecting the matric exams which went ahead as planned despite the damage.

“Lower class classrooms that were not affected were used in some schools, but most of all we appreciate the kind gesture of our churches who offered their buildings to be used for exam purposes. We are truly grateful.”

The Deputy Minister asked members of the community to remain alert, report any damage, avoid river crossings and monitor weather updates from the South African Meteorological Services for their safety.
