As the country prepares to celebrate Diwali this week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rains and showers with lightning in Mumbai and surrounding districts for the next few days.

According to the weather department, from Wednesday, Mumbai and Thane can expect light rains and showers with lightning, which will continue till Thursday and Friday respectively. However, no alert has been issued yet.

Meanwhile, in Raigad and Ratnagiri, the IMD has issued a yellow alert from Wednesday to Friday, indicating the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning and light to moderate showers along with gusty winds.

Talking to Indian ExpressSunil Kamble, director of IMD Mumbai, explained that the expected showers are due to a cyclonic circulation of upper air in the Arabian Sea.

“Currently, there is a cyclonic circulation of upper air over the Arabian Sea, which persists at 1.5 km above sea level. Due to this system, we expect some rain activity in the coming days. As a yellow alert has been sounded in Raigad, the effect of the system may bring light rains and showers with lightning to Mumbai as well,” Kamble said.

This latest information also comes on the heels of the IMD’s announcement of the withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from Mumbai. While some showers have continued since then, the monsoon has gradually withdrawn, leading to rising temperatures in the region.
