Anthony Davis has already won a major under JJ Redick’s system

Los Angeles Lakers center Anthony Davis has been named Western Conference Player of the Week following a remarkable first three games of the season. Davis is the first player to win the award this season along with Boston Celtics’ Jayson Tatum, who won the Eastern Conference award.

Davis has previously won the Player of the Week award multiple times, most recently winning in March 2024.

Davis averaged 34 points, 11 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game in the Lakers’ first week of the season. The nine-time NBA All-Star proved to be a key reason the Lakers started the season 3-0, their best start in over a decade since 2011.

The 31-year-old got off to a hot start during the Lakers’ season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Davis started the season with a double-double, finishing the game with 36 points, 16 points and four assists to help the Lakers beat the Timberwolves 110-103. He followed that up three days later in a win over the Suns with 35 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Lakers superstar forward LeBron James took over as the team’s leading scorer in Game 3 against the Sacramento Kings, leading the Lakers in a strong fourth-quarter comeback, but Davis had another strong outing with 31 points, nine rebounds and two assists in the 131-127 win.

Davis is currently tied with Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks for the league lead in points per game. He also ranks sixth in the NBA in blocks per game and tied for 11th in rebounds.

First-year head coach JJ Redick prioritized getting Davis involved in the offense early in the season and opening up shooting opportunities for the superstar. The efforts paid off as Davis filled that role and James even called him the “focal point” of the team’s offense. James added that it’s the team’s job to feed Davis the ball and give him those chances to take over the game.

The 31-year-old is just getting started, and barring injury, there should be no reason why he can’t continue to be dominant.

Davis and the Lakers will have a chance to continue their hot start as they take on the Suns on Monday.
