Eisenhower Elementary School students recently got a lesson outside of the classroom about bus safety.

National School Bus Safety Week was celebrated Oct. 21-25, with this school year’s theme “Safe Driving for the Future.”

Tiffany Jackson, a school bus driver for D&R Transportation, went to Eisenhower Elementary every morning last week to help educate students about school bus safety,

The students were actively involved in learning about bus safety and its importance. Jackson said the basics have been covered.

“They were reminded to stay in their seats, never run towards a bus and be careful when crossing the road.” she said.

Teaching students a simple acronym for bus safety could help keep them safe.

S: Stand at least 10 feet (five giant steps) from the curb while waiting.

A: Always wait for the bus to come to a complete stop and for the driver to signal that it is time to board.

F: Face forward once you are in the seat.

E: Get off the bus after it comes to a complete stop. Always cross in front of the bus once the driver signals that it is safe to do so.

Jackson, who spent the mornings with the students, had nothing but positive feedback.

“All the kids were great” she said. “This ensures that the safety measures we teach are not only effective, but well received by students.”

In continuation of the bus safety lessons, the students were also given activity books. The books are designed to reinforce safety measures and ensure learning continues and children’s safety is a top priority.
