(ABC 6 News) — Monday marked the fourth week of the murder trial of Adam Fravel, who has been charged with multiple counts of murder in the death of Madeline Kingsbury.

As the fourth week of the trial began, Monday was supposed to be a critical day of testimony, but instead turned into a grueling showdown between lawyers.

The showdown has boiled down to what evidence can and cannot be allowed during the trial, with lawyers on both sides fighting for what they want.

More than two hours of the day were spent without a jury as prosecutors and defense attorneys try to throw out evidence and testimony in the trial.

Fravel’s team won when the judge barred Kingsbury’s diary entries from being introduced as hearsay evidence.

Later in the day, the defense objected to what Kingsbury’s biological mother would testify, but this time, the judge sided with the state and would not censure him.

The third break of the day was surrounded by surveillance video that prosecutors have hinted for weeks that may have captured Kingsbury’s van after her disappearance. So far, the judge has not decided whether they will be admissible.

Kingsbury’s family and friends were supposed to testify Monday, but because of the slow nature of how everything moved, they are now expected to testify Tuesday.

Meanwhile, police photos taken of Fravel, showing him undressed in shorts, were played in court, showing bruises and scratches on his face and body.

These photos were taken by police about a week after Kingsbury disappeared and showed two yellow bruises on Fravel’s chest, one on his left forearm near the wrist and another just above his left elbow.

Red scratches were also seen on his nose and above his lip, as prosecutors said Kingsbury fought for her life from Fravel that day.

However, defense lawyers have already raised concerns about why these marks were documented a week later and not in his initial interviews.

A text from Fravel to a friend on the afternoon Kingsbury disappeared was also featured, as Fravel wrote: “Sup bro what’s up friday?”

At this point in the trial, 52 state witnesses took the stand inside the Blue Earth County Justice Center, and none were family or friends of Fravel or Kingsbury.
