1 dead, 3 others injured after car bursts into flames in crash outside Miami high school – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

MIAMI (WSVN) – One person is dead and three others were rushed to the hospital, one in critical condition, after a two-vehicle crash sent cars bursting into flames outside a Miami high school.

Miami Fire and Miami Police responded to the scene Monday afternoon just outside iTech – Miami Mega Technology Magnet High School located at 6101 NW 2nd Avenue.

A school board officer was the first to notify authorities after witnessing the accident.

7Skyforce hovered over the scene, where crews surrounded several vehicles believed to have caught fire in the crash.

Cell phone video revealed the moments one of the vehicles caught fire. Flames were seen coming from the car.

Witnesses told 7News that one of the vehicles was traveling northbound when the driver looked at their phone. The witness said moments later that they heard the crash occur along with a burst of flames from the vehicles involved.

“All I hear is boom, boom, boom, boom,” said Layma Faith Denavar, who witnessed the crash. “And immediately, I got out of the car because my mom was like, ‘Oh my God, a car accident.’ I got out of the car, ran across the street in that direction and could see the flames and the people at the door. I’ve seen them push kids back into school.”

“I heard the crash, so I started running here,” said one witness.

“All I hear is people screaming, flames going out, explosions,” said Lance Elijah, another witness. “And then we all had to go inside.”

At least one person was ejected from one of the vehicles and suffered burns, according to rescue crews.

7News cameras captured the moments the person was transported to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

According to Miami police, four victims were involved in the incident, one of whom tragically died in the crash.

None of the victims involved in the accident had anything to do with the school.

“One of the vehicles that you can see behind us appears to have lost control, gone over the curb, hitting several fixed objects as well as two vehicles,” Miami Police Department Capt. Freddy Cruz said. “Now, once the vehicles hit, something happened where this vehicle was engulfed in flames. There were two people who managed to get out of one of the vehicles.”

Roads between Northwest 60th Street and 61st Street and Second Avenue remain closed.

The car did not come into contact with the school.

An investigation is underway to determine what led to the crash.
