Pittsburgh Steelers QB avoids major injury

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields is questionable for Week 8 against New York Giants after injuring himself at the end of the training week. Despite the uncertainty over his status, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that there is no concern about a serious injury to Fields.

The Steelers will test Fields’ hamstring before their game against the Giants and make a decision on his status for Week 8. However, with the bye week following, Pittsburgh could be cautious and let Fields rest before returning in Week 10 against the Washington Chiefs.

If Fields doesn’t play or is named inactive, he will likely serve as the backup quarterback behind Russell Wilson and Kyle Allen. This will allow him to come into play if both other defenders cannot finish. This is the same circumstance the Steelers used for Wilson during his calf injury.

While Fields could still play against the Giants, that probably eliminates the chances of seeing a deck for it during the game. The Steelers are waiting to develop a role for Fields after handing the starting job to Wilson. It will probably wait until after the bye week now.

The Steelers will announce their final inactive list an hour and a half before game time. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:20 PM ET.
