Cold front to bring weather changes to Arizona

PHOENIX (AZ Family) — A trough of low pressure and a strong cold front are moving into Arizona, bringing big weather changes starting today.

The average high for this time of year in Phoenix is 85 degrees and we’ll be well above the low 90s again today. But a cooling trend begins tomorrow thanks to a cold front headed our way. Ahead of this front, look for windy conditions in the Valley today with winds around 10 to 20 mph this afternoon and evening.

Stronger winds are moving into the Northern Arizona high country today, where a wind advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph could gust to 45 mph.

A wave of moisture associated with the remnants of Hurricane Kristy is moving toward Arizona and could bring light rain showers today and tonight to the high country. The Valley also has a slight chance of showers this evening, close to 20%. Amounts should be very light at a tenth of an inch or less.

As a strong cold front arrives tomorrow, more rain and eventually snow is expected across the high country. Amounts also appear very low for most of Arizona as most of the moisture with this trough of low pressure is expected to stay north of Arizona. However, the system brings great coolness to our region.

Look for much colder temperatures in northern Arizona tomorrow with freezing temperatures down to 4,000 feet. In the Valley, we’ll see afternoon highs in the mid to low 70s both Tuesday and Wednesday, with morning temperatures dropping into the low 40s to mid 50s.

Halloween in the Valley looks mild this year with clear skies and afternoon temperatures in the 80s, dropping into the 70s for trick-or-treating.
