911 caller who said he fell off cliff while running from Bear wanted for murder

Authorities in Tennessee are investigating the death of a man they say was found with false identification on him earlier this month — and the false identification may have been linked to a man now wanted for murder.

On Friday, October 18, authorities in Polk County, Tenn., received a call from an alleged “hiker in distress” who claimed to have fallen off a cliff while trying to escape a bear, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. Polk County officials transferred the call to Monroe County police.

The man allegedly claimed he was injured and partially submerged in the water, according to police, and a call led police to the Charles Hall Bridge on Mountain Street.

Responding authorities found a victim on him with identification belonging to “Brandon Kristopher Andrade,” according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

After the victim was taken to a forensics center, police determined the deceased was not Andrade and that the ID was allegedly stolen “and used on multiple occasions,” the sheriff’s statement said.

Investigators determined the person using the identification was Nicholas Wayne Hamlett, who was wanted in Alabama for an alleged parole violation, according to the statement.

Authorities have not publicly identified the victim, who is being referred to as John Doe. Officials with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are working to develop a sketch of the victim so they can identify him. Monroe County officials did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for additional information Monday, Oct. 28.

Police believe Hamlett was the first stressed-out hiker to claim he ran from a bear. They say they spoke to him again afterward, during which time he used a fake name, though it was unclear if the name he used was “Brandon Kristopher Andrade.”

He is believed to have fled Tennessee before police could establish his true identity and is currently at large.

Hamlett is charged with first-degree murder, according to Monroe County officials.

He also faces charges in Alabama for attempted murder and kidnapping, among several other charges, per AL.com, ABC 33 and WTVC. He has reportedly already pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in connection with that case, according to AL.com, but information about his pending charges was not immediately available.

Hamlett is 5 feet 7 inches tall with brown hair and blue eyes and allegedly goes by several aliases, including Brandon Kristopher Andrade, according to Monroe County police.

Anyone with information about him is urged to contact Monroe County Dispatch at 423-442-4357 or the sheriff’s office at 423-442-3911.
