The San Francisco 49ers are expecting Christian McCaffrey to resume practice during the bye week, hoping the star running back can energize the offense as the team enters the second half of the season. McCaffrey has yet to play this season as he landed on injured reserve with bilateral Achilles tendinitis.

The 49ers plan to open McCaffrey’s practice window, potentially allowing him to make his season debut as early as Nov. 10 on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Francisco’s first game after the break. The team is coming off a 30-24 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

During a segment on The Pat McAfee ShowAdam Schefter provided an encouraging update on McCaffrey’s recovery.

“So far, he hasn’t had a single failure during recovery,” Schefter reported. “I don’t want to beat this, do I? Knock on wood. I don’t want to do that, but he had no failures and looked strong. And right now, yeah, he’s ready to come back, I think, after the bye and the game against the Buccaneers.”

Schefter cautioned against over-optimism, noting that everyone anticipated McCaffrey’s return in Week 1 before he suffered a setback. However, he added: “Right now, he’s looking to play against the Buccaneers.”

While head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t reveal many details about McCaffrey’s progress, he too expressed optimism.

“Christian is still progressing through rehab,” Shanahan said last week before the Cowboys game. “He hasn’t had any failures, so it’s been good news so far. I’d be surprised to get him back this week, but hopefully the bye week goes well and he’ll have a much better chance there. right after the bye week.”

Running back Jordan Mason stepped in during McCaffrey’s absence, but suffered a setback Sunday night against the Cowboys, re-aggravating the shoulder injury (sprained AC joint) originally suffered by the Seattle Seahawks in Week 6. Shanahan suggested Mason’s injury is not considered too serious.

“JP (Mason) got hit,” Shanahan said after the game. “JP tried to come back and maybe he could have, but (RB) Isaac (Guerendo) he rolled in and did a good job.”
