Trump allies conspire to grant so-called top secret security clearances without FBI background checks

Members of Donald TrumpHis inner circle plots to avoid law enforcement background checks to get immediate top-secret security clearances for political appointees, according to a New York Times report.

Citing three sources, the newspaper said a memo was sent to at least six people in the innermost monastery of Trump World, where the idea of the installation. MAGA loyalists after choice without becoming traditional FBI background checks are gaining steam in some quarters.

The Times reported that Boris Epstein, Trump’s legal adviser is among those who support the idea, but that it is unclear whether Trump himself is aware of the memo.

During Trump’s tenure, background checks stopped the appointments of some of his White House aides, including Epshteyn and Trump’s son-in-law. Jared Kushner.

Epshteyn, who was indicted earlier this year for his alleged involvement in Trump’s fraudulent voter scheme in Arizona, is one of Trump’s top advisers, speaking with the Republican nominee several times a day, according to Times.

He reached a plea deal that overturned his conviction in a 2014 assault case following a bar fight, and in 2021 he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after allegedly groping two women in a nightclub night. His conviction was overturned last year.

The Times reported that the proposal circulating holds that the Trump camp could outsource private-sector background checks on appointees it wants during the transition period and then approve their access to classified secrets after taking office.

It appears that these privately obtained background checks would only be seen by the White House and would not be shared with law enforcement.

Trump spokesman Steven Cheung did not immediately respond Timesrequest for comment on the memo, instead chiding the vice president Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party for allegedly using the “Justice Department to attack President Trump and his supporters,” and then added that Trump would take advantage of the “full powers of the presidency” to finalize political appointments if re-elected.
