‘Really crossing the line’: SNL Korea receives backlash for sexually ridiculing women in K-drama parody Jeongnyeon Entertainment News

Just how much is too much?

On October 27, the comedy series SNL Korea attempted a parody of the K-drama Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born, but its take on the female-centric story drew backlash.

Set in the 1950s, the drama follows lead Yoon Jeong-nyeon (played by Kim Tae-ri) as she joins an all-female musical theater company to pursue her dreams.

In the SNL script, the lead actor is comedian Ahn Young-mi, whose name has been changed to Jeot-nyeon. Jeot refers to breast milk in Korean.

Similar to Jeong-nyeon in the drama, Young-mi performs a line from the pansori (a traditional Korean genre of musical storytelling) Love Song.

However, the lyrics are changed. Instead of “come here, let’s have fun,” Young-mi sings, “Come here, let’s make it empty,” while making suggestive gestures.

Cast member Jung Yi-rang interrupts, “Stop. Looking at this makes me feel like I could be pregnant. This could help birth policy.”

The skit drew criticism both locally and internationally.

Korean reports wrote that audiences expressed their disgust, saying the parody attempt “sexually ridicules” the women in the Jeongnyeon drama.

A post about the show on Korean forum Theqoo received more than 700 comments overnight, most slamming SNL Korea.

“You’re really overstepping the mark,” said one netizen.

“The banter is too much…not funny at all,” commented another.

Another thought the skit was “disrespectful” to the original drama and cast: “If you’re going to do it this way, don’t parody it… It’s a disservice to the original.”

The skit also circulated on X, where international netizens pointed out that Jeong-nyeon is a minor on the show.

One even tagged NBC, the US station that hosts the original Saturday Night Live (SNL), urging them to consider revoking SNL Korea’s license.

Although SNL Korea has yet to respond to the controversy, this is not the first time it has received backlash.

They have previously been condemned by the public for parodying, to the point of mockery, author Han Kang – who recently made history as the first Korean to win the Nobel Prize for Literature – and NewJeans’ Hanni, who spoke about workplace harassment at the National Assembly. .
