Woman killed in Millbury outdoor fire

A woman died in an open fire at a camp in Millbury Saturday night, and crews Sunday were still battling a large wildfire overnight in Salem as dry and windy conditions increased the risk of wildfires in southern N.Y. England.

When state police responded to the small fire in Millbury around 8:20 p.m. Saturday, a trooper found the woman dead in the camp where the fire was believed to have started. The fire was extinguished and the cause is under investigation. Police noted that Massachusetts was under a red flag warning Saturday, meaning any wildfire could spread quickly and be difficult to extinguish.

Another fire broke out Saturday night in the woods near a Walmart store in Salem. Flames were visible and smoke engulfed the area. The fire chief estimated 40 to 60 acres of forest had burned, according to Boston25News. The fire was still active Sunday afternoon, a dispatcher said.

No injuries or evacuations were reported.

“This is an ongoing incident,” the Lynn Fire Department posted in a Facebook alert. “Smoke from the fire will be prominent throughout the neighborhood all day. Small fires in the burn area will continue to burn as our members work.”

A red flag warning was in effect Sunday for southern New Hampshire, where several brush fires broke out the day before.

The National Weather Service warned that the combination of dryness and winds gusting up to 35 mph were expected to create critical fire weather conditions leading to the potential for rapid fire growth in dead and dry vegetation.

“Please use extreme caution when disposing of cigarettes,” said the Lynn Fire Department. “Don’t throw them on the ground or off your porch or balcony. Please soak or put them in water. We can all do our part to keep our city safe.”
