The forecast calls for 3 innings of rain this week in the North Bay. Here’s when

Fall-like conditions, including rain, cool temperatures and damp winds, will arrive in the North Bay just in time for Halloween, according to the National Weather Service.

By Thursday, North Bay residents can expect highs in the low to mid 60s with lows in the 40s to 45s.

Temperatures are expected to be about 10 degrees below normal as moist, cold air moves into the region.

“Fall starts today,” Dylan Flynn, senior meteorologist at the weather service’s Monterey office, said Sunday.

Light but steady rain coupled with cloudy skies began Sunday morning and is likely to continue throughout the day, Flynn said.

Most areas are expected to receive a few hundredths of an inch of rain, although higher elevations such as the coastal mountains could receive a bit more. Tracks were reported in northeast Santa Rosa at about 10 am

Rain totals have dropped in forecast models since forecasters started tracking them, Flynn said.

Through Monday, forecasters believe rain will still be a factor, but the pattern will change to scattered showers with a few breaks of sunshine.

Most places will have a 50 percent chance of rain, meaning some will get lucky with showers throughout the day — though they might only get a few hundredths of an inch — and some could stay completely dry.

By Tuesday, those in the North Bay are expected to get a break from the rain, but the morning will feature the strongest winds of the week.

Sustained winds of about 10 mph with gusts of about 20 mph are expected in the valley, Flynn said. Upper elevations could experience gusts up to 30 mph.

Temperatures, which are expected to reach highs in the 60s, will feel even cooler due to these onshore winds.

“It will be visible when you walk out the door,” he said.

Light rain chances will start up again Wednesday night into Thursday morning, but don’t worry, it should end before the tricks start.

Even if rain does fall during Halloween activities, it will again be light and only yield up to a tenth of an inch.

The third wave of rain predicted could occur Friday and Saturday, but there are many discrepancies between the models, Flynn said. Forecasters will narrow down the details for that storm later this week.

Overall, the rain won’t have much of an impact, with low amounts of precipitation forecast and no chance of flooding, Flynn said.

Also a plus, the cooler air that moves in with each cold front passage will benefit the area and reduce the region’s chances of fire spread.

This week’s forecast is also a reminder to start preparing for winter conditions, Flynn said.
