Latest US election: Donald Trump rallies at iconic New York venue – as Kamala Harris hits must-win state | News from the USA

A comedian has come under fire for making an offensive joke about Puerto Rico and Latin America at tonight’s Donald Trump rally in New York.

Tony Hinchcliffe described Puerto Rico as a “floating garbage island” on stage.

“I don’t know if you know this, but there is literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now,” he said.

“I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”

There was a loud “ooh” from the crowd that seemed to drown out the sound of laughter.

He also said he welcomes migrants to the US “with open arms” – before adding “and by open arms I mean so…” and waving his arms in front of him as if to say “no” .

“These Latinos, they like to make babies too, just know it, they do, they do,” he added.

“There’s no retreat, they’re not doing that, they’re coming in just like they did in our country.”

Mr Trump has been regularly criticized for his rhetoric on migrants and has said he would carry out the biggest deportation in US history if he wins the election.

“Know that this is what they think of you”

Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who is of Puerto Rican descent and was born in New York, reacted to the comments during a live stream with Kamala Harris’ colleague Tim Walz.

“When you have a dump calling Puerto Rico ‘floating garbage,’ you know that’s what they think of you,” she said.

“It’s what they think about anyone making less money than them.”

Mr Hinchcliffe took to X to defend himself, accusing Ms Ocasio-Cortez of having no “sense of humour” and saying he was enjoying his holiday in Puerto Rico.
