Exclusive: Kamala Harris discusses latest polls ahead of Election Day interview on News in Action

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — With election day fast approaching, Vice President Kamala Harris was in Philadelphia on Sunday, making his final pitch to the city’s black voters.

The Democratic candidate made a series of stops in Philadelphia, including church services, a barber shop, a bookstore, a Puerto Rican restaurant and a youth basketball facility.

She even organized a rally to end a long day of campaigning.

Action News’ Walter Perez caught up with Harris during an exclusive conversation at Philly Cutz Barbershop in West Philadelphia.

There, Perez asked Harris about her final pitch to voters.

“Overall, to really understand that I think America is ready for a new way forward. That there is a new generation of leadership built on optimism,” she explained.

Experts say Harris’ ability to communicate that message could make the difference between winning the race or losing it.

In 2016, Hillary Clinton attracted 92% of the black vote. In 2020, Joe Biden got 90%.

A recent New York Times/Siena College poll has Harris at 78 percent.

As Harris, Clinton and Biden all ran former President Donald TrumpPerez asked the vice president her thoughts on the matter.

“Black voters are no different than any other voter. They’re going to focus on problems, and that’s why I’m here with people, understanding that they actually want a solution-focused leader,” Harris responded.

The poll went on to say that 78 percent support drops to 70 percent among black men who are considered likely voters.

Still, Harris says she’s not overly concerned about the survey.

“I know that’s what the media likes to talk about, but the experiences I have when I look at, for example, the rally I did two days ago — 30,000 people showed up. There were people of both sexes, every race, every background, every age,” she noted.

To end Sunday, Harris held a rally in Philadelphia.

Speaking at a city recreation center, the Democratic vice president singled out young voters, praising them for being “rightly anxious for change” and telling the audience that “there is too much at stake” in the campaign.

“We don’t have to wake up the day after the election and regret what we could have done in the next nine days,” Harris said.

Mark Ruffalo and Don Cheadle, two actors who starred in the Marvel “Avengers” movies, were at the rally. Harris reminded the crowd that Pennsylvania’s early voting deadline is Tuesday, telling them to “finish tomorrow if you can.”

While Harris was in Philadelphia on Sunday, her running mate — Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz — was campaigning in Las Vegas. On Monday, Walz will visit Manitowoc and Waukesha, Wis., before joining Harris for a rally in Ann Arbor, Mich., where singer Maggie Rogers is scheduled to perform.
