Victor book sale, pumpkin composting and more on tap this week

It’s the season.

No, not that season yet, but several events and activities that are related to Halloween and fall will help ease the transition into the hustle and bustle of the holidays.

Here’s what’s happening this week.

1. Studying the ups and downs of Victor

Ryan Vogt will present “Levitation, Anti-Levitation and the Meissner Effect” at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the Victor Farmington Library, 15 W. Main St., Victor. Vogt, a senior scientist and mathematician at the US Department of Defense and the National Security Agency, will experimentally demonstrate the phenomenon of superconductivity, also known as the Meissner Effect. Learn how a superconductor can levitate, anti-levitate, and move freely in extremely cold conditions, as well as the scientific principles behind this phenomenon. Attendees will also have the chance to experiment with the levitating superconductor after the presentation. This event is open to people of all ages. 2. Victor Farmers Market season finale

Unfortunately, the last Victor Farmers Market of the summer season is Wednesday, October 30th from 3 to 6 pm in the City Hall parking lot, E. Main St. 60, Victor. There are only eight months left until next season’s market opens.

3. Books, books and more books at Eastview Mall

The Victor Farmington Library book sale runs for four days starting Thursday, Oct. 31 at Eastview Mall in Victor. Hours are 11:00am – 7:00pm October 31st, 11:00am – 4:00pm November 1st, 1:00pm – 7:00pm November 2nd and 1:00pm – 4:00pm November 3rd. Find the sale near the Food Court. The sale benefits the Friends of the Victor Farmington Library.

4. VA Day at the DMV in Canandaigua

In honor of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, the Ontario County Department of Motor Vehicles office at 20 Ontario St., Canandaigua, will host a Veterans Day from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 2. Transactions will be processed for veterans only. , and representatives from the Veterans Administration and the Ontario County Veterans Agency will be on hand to answer questions about eligibility for medical, disability and other VA and state benefits. Bring your DD-214.

5. Orange are you glad you can compost pumpkins?

Halloween will be over and gone by the time of this pumpkin composting event, planned for 8-11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Ontario County parking lot at the corner of Ontario and Pleasant streets, Canandaigua; City of Geneva Transfer Station, 32 White Springs Road, Geneva; and City of Victor Transfer Station, 60 Rawson Road, Victor. Gourds, flowers, hay and cornstalks will also be accepted. No plastic or metal. All events are free to Ontario residents. If you miss it, no big deal; another event is planned for November 9. 6. See outdoor photos at Wood Library

An awards ceremony and reception for photographers who participated in an outdoor photography event will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., Nov. 2, in Wood Library’s Ewing Room, 134 N. Main St. , Canandaigua. Ten Arts Council participating photographers took their pictures outdoors in Ontario County from September 21st to October 5th. After review by the Arts Council Exhibition Committee, three top prizes will be awarded to the three photographers based on creativity and overall appeal. The exhibition runs until November 15.

7. Christkindl Jam rocks Canandaigua

The Christkindl Jam will be held at 4 p.m., Nov. 2, at the Granger Homestead, 295 N. Main St., Canandaigua. Skycoasters, Old World Warblers and Kids in the Basement will perform in this precursor to the Christkindle Market, which opens on November 8. Macarollin and North Coast Catering will also be food trucks. Tickets are $20. For details visit grangerhomestead.org or call 585-394-1472.

8. Listen to Vivaldi’s “Gloria” in Canandaigua

Antonio Vivaldi’s “Gloria” will be performed at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, at the First Congregational Church of Canandaigua, 58 N. Main St., Canandaigua. This free choir performance will take place during the regular worship service. Soloists are Abigail Rice and Jane Huffer. Edith Rice will conduct and Denise Morphy will accompany on the organ.
